The gift of giving is in high supply with the annual Operation Christmas Child shoebox campaign.

It's been underway for weeks now and this is the week the Christmas Shoe boxes need to be filled and dropped off.

Frank King with Samaritan's Purse spearheads the project to help children around the world.

King says he's been lucky enough to be there when children open up their Christmas shoe box, many receiving a gift for the very first time.

"At shoe box distribution events in El Salvador and in Costa Rica and way over in West Africa in Senegal. Some of the kids are so excited."

King says the reactions widely vary from trading with friends to shock upon opening their shoe box.

"The kids will carefully open their box, they'll look through it, then they will close the box, and they will not look at it again until they get home so they can show their family."

It's National collection week from November 18-24 and it's not too late to pack a shoebox.

Click here for what to pack into the shoe box.

And you can drop off your box at one of four local locations.

  • High River Baptist Church
  • Okotoks Evangelical Free Church
  • South Calgary Community Church
  • Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel (Calgary)
