Winkler Mayor Henry Siemens reflects on Christmas lights and community spirit
Winkler’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony was a moment of celebration for the community, as Mayor Henry Siemens shared meaningful thoughts about the season. "When we think about it at this time of year... for children, these Christmas lights mean that it's almost time for gifts," said Siemens, reflecting on how the symbolism of lights carries different meanings for everyone. "For others, it’s the end of the year... for some, it brings a sense of hope and optimism."
Siemens also touched on the spiritual significance of the lights, especially for those of faith. "It symbolizes what that hope of that first Christmas was. It’s the light driving out the darkness. It’s the hope that comes with that and the promise that lies in that." Ultimately, Siemens expressed that the community’s shared experiences during this season create lasting memories. "It is our sincere desire... that the memories we create this year are better."
A record-breaking crowd at the tree lighting ceremony
This year’s event saw the largest crowd in its history, a testament to Winkler’s growth and the increasing presence of newcomers to the city. "We’ve never come close to seeing this many people here," Siemens noted, clearly moved by the turnout. The warm weather this year contributed to the large attendance, with no need for the usual winter clothing and mittens.
The mayor acknowledged the hard work that goes into organizing such an event, crediting the staff, sponsors, and volunteers who made it possible. "When we have our staff and our sponsors and our volunteers putting all that time in to create this and then have this many people come out, it gives them joy," Siemens said, emphasizing the importance of community. "It helps us to connect with people in an entirely different way than we would at work, or in other spaces."
A year of triumphs and challenges
On a personal note, Mayor Siemens shared that 2024 has been a year of both highs and lows for him as mayor. Reflecting on the passing of Councillor Don Fehr, Siemens acknowledged the deep loss felt by the community. "The very unexpected passing of Councillor Fehr was hard," he shared. He also expressed optimism for the future, especially with the upcoming by-election, noting the high caliber of candidates. "No matter who you vote for, Winkler can’t lose. They’re great candidates."
Despite the challenges, Siemens remains hopeful for the upcoming year, encouraging the community to make time for family and create lasting, positive memories during the holiday season. "We hope that you're able to find some time with those that are close to you... and that the end of this year will lead to a great start to next year."
A heartfelt thank-you from the Mayor
To close, Siemens expressed his gratitude to the community for their support throughout the year. "I do, I think as we look at it... there has been some tremendous highs and there’s been a really hard loss as well," he shared. "We hope too, that you're able to find some time with those that are close to you with people that you treasure that you're able to build your own memories that are positive and good."
As Winkler continues to grow and evolve, Mayor Henry Siemens remains deeply committed to the community’s well-being and unity, especially during the holiday season
