The Weyburn Comprehensive School senior musical, "Pop Stars" will be hitting the Cugnet Centre stage this Wednesday at 7 p.m. Showtimes continue Thursday and Friday evenings, with a dessert theatre performance on Sunday, November 24th.
The senior musical was moved this year to the fall semester, as the WCS spring musical for the 2023-24 year was canceled due to the teachers' strike.
During the dress rehearsal on Sunday, we spoke with some of the Grade 12 student lead actors in the musical.
"It was kind of a shock to see that we got to do it so early in the year," shared Harper Williams, who plays the role of Shannon. "I think the main reason for it was we didn't get to do one last year, but it's been coming along together really well."
Brinley Klapak, who plays the role of Steffi, said she's excited for the costumes, and because it's different from other musicals in which she has taken part.
"I'm really excited that it's in the fall this year because I play ball, so it actually works better in my schedule, but also I feel like more people are willing to come watch a musical in the winter, like they're more inside than outside."
Kailyn Mcfadden, who plays the role of Ella, said, "I'm excited that this show is happening because we didn't get one last year, so it's like everything gets to come back now, and this is my senior year."
"It's really different from most of the things we've done. We did an 80s show and now we get to do a 90s show. So it's really exciting to see the different eras."
"It's so crazy busy at the end of the year, it's nice to have it in the fall," shared Jyllian Payak, who plays the role of Tina. "I like the 90s vibe. It's more fun, and it'll be exciting."
Payak added she enjoys the wardrobe changes, which include casual 90s wear and performance ensembles.
"So far it's going pretty good. There are still a lot of things that we need to work on, but I think it'll be good for the show. I think people are going to really like it," shared Jonas Burdan, who plays the role of Mark.
"90s kids are going to love it, just because it's all the 90s music, it's all the 90s costumes."
"We kind of are really trying to bring the 90s into this musical, so I'm excited for that."
A sneak peek performance will take place Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. with an option for the public to join the Grades sevens through nines in the audience.
Regular shows will be from the 20th to the 22nd at 7 p.m., with adult tickets selling for $20, and senior and student tickets for $15. Children five and under are free with an adult ticket.
The final show on November 24th at 2 p.m. will be a dessert theatre, with tickets selling for five dollars more.
“Just get your tickets and come out and check out our show. You can get tickets at the school office or from a cast member because cast members are going to be pre-selling some tickets as well,” invited music teacher Brayden Jensen.
