The cherished Christmas event, From Everywhere to Bethlehem, is back in Winkler this weekend, bringing the nativity story to life in an unforgettable way. Taking place November 22-24 at Winkler Park by the pool, this interactive journey is perfect for the whole family and promises to get you into the Christmas spirit.

“Christmas isn’t Christmas without it”

Cyndie Toews, who is involved in promoting the event and a longtime participant, describes the event as more than just a tradition. “They often say Christmas isn’t Christmas until we’ve been to From Everywhere to Bethlehem,” she shares.

Visitors can expect an engaging retelling of the nativity story. “It takes you through the city gates and all the different areas of interest before you know the Christmas story—the real Christmas story—the birth of Jesus,” says Toews.

The event runs Friday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Bring a tin for the bin

In the spirit of giving, visitors are asked to “pay a tax” at the city gates—non-perishable food items that will be donated to the local food cupboard. Last year, the event collected 3,000 pounds of food to help those in need during the winter season.

“The gatekeeper will definitely ask you why you’re there and if you’ve brought your taxes,” Toews jokes, adding, “It’s a tax people are more than willing to pay.”

Live animals and lots of fun

As always, this year’s presentation will feature live animals, including sheep and a donkey, adding to the realism and charm of the production. “It makes such a realistic element to the production,” says Toews.

Roman soldiers also play a big part, often delighting and surprising younger attendees. “They carry their swords, they’re dressed up, and their acting is very, very good,” Toews shares. “They’re also very sensitive to children who might find them a little too gruff.”

Warm up after your journey

After the interactive walk-through, visitors are invited to enjoy hot chocolate and cookies in a cozy tent. There’s also a craft and bake sale, where donations support local charities.

“It’s a lot of work to put on,” says Toews, “but seeing the wonder of it all come through makes it so worthwhile.”
