Okotoks may be getting its own Remembrance crosswalk next year.
Mayor Tanya Thorn addressed Okotokians about the possibility on her Facebook page after Cochrane's Remembrance crosswalk garnered praise and sparked many conversations on social media.
In her post, Thorn said it's something the Town has discussed with the local Legion branch in the past, though concerns over people walking and driving over images of poppies and veterans has.
However, with this latest wave of support for Remembrance crosswalks, the Town has again asked the Legion if it's something they'd like to explore.
President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #291 in Okotoks, Rick Oncescu, says the Legion is pursuing the prospect, but they'll be taking some time with the design.
"We want to make sure we get it right, because there's been some controversy over some of the designs that went up. One of the things we have to deal with is the use of the poppy. There are protocols on where and how you can use it. I'm aware of some places that have had to adjust the design that they've put down."
The Royal Canadian Legion website has a page dedicated to the use of the Remembrance Poppy trademark, including a rule that states that the Remembrance Poppy can never "be placed where it can be walked on."
Mayor Thorn's Facebook also makes mention of the existing Remembrance Day imagery in town, including the veterans wall, the veterans banner program, and poppy flower beds, all of which are on Veterans Way.
With those already being in place each year, Oncescu feels there's an obvious choice for the placement of the crosswalk.
"It's going to tie in with Veterans Way, it's just a very complimentary process, because our suggestion would be that it would be located at the crosswalk at the Cenotaph."
Once the members of the Legion have agreed on a design, they'll take it to the Town for approval before moving forward.
