At 1:55 p.m. today, Albertans will experience a test of the National Public Alerting System as part of a province-wide Alberta Emergency Alert drill.

The test will be broadcast across various channels, including television, radio, wireless devices, websites, social media platforms, and the Alberta Emergency Alert mobile app. Compatible cell phones will also receive the alert directly.

These tests, conducted annually in May and November, are crucial for identifying and resolving system issues to ensure the alert system functions effectively during real emergencies, such as tornadoes, wildfires, floods, and Amber Alerts.

Albertans are encouraged to download the Alberta Emergency Alert app to receive warnings directly to their phones. To receive the alert, mobile devices must meet the following requirements:

  •  Compatible with the alert system.
  • Connected to an LTE 4G network or higher or to Wi-Fi with the app installed.
  • If the device is silent, the alert will still display but may not emit a notification sound.

The test also serves as a reminder for residents to discuss emergency preparedness with family, friends, and colleagues. Topics to consider include:

  •  How would you respond if the alert were real?
  •  Do you have an emergency plan and emergency kits for your household?
  •  Have you made arrangements for pets or livestock in case of evacuation?

Albertans are urged to make emergency preparedness part of their routine to ensure they are ready to act if a real emergency arises.
