Red Deer Public Schools promoted inclusivity among students by launching a program aimed at preventing bullying.
Kindergarten to Grade 5 students participated in the Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out, Seek help (WITS®) program in conjunction with Bullying Awareness Week (Nov. 18 to Nov. 22).
The program gave students the knowledge and skills to deal effectively with discrimination and peer victimization; work with parents to help transfer student’s knowledge and skills to home environments; and work with community stakeholders to transfer students’ knowledge and skills to the broader community.
The introduction of the program was a direct response to feedback gathered from students during a series of engagement sessions last year.
The sessions provided an opportunity for students to share their experiences with bullying, offer insights into how incidents occur, and suggest ways the division and schools could make a difference.

Through the conversations, it was revealed that early education in kindness and empathy is key to creating a positive and supportive school environment.
“We learned a great deal from our students. Their insights into bullying and their suggestions for change were incredibly powerful. We listened, and now we are acting,” said Nicole Buchanan, Board Chair. “The WITS® program reflects our commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment where every student feels respected and supported. We believe this approach will make a meaningful impact in our schools, and ultimately, in our community.”
Through the program, students were given the tools to handle challenges related to peer pressure, social media, and complex social interactions.
“This program provides our students vital skills in handling difficult situations, both in and out of the classroom,” said Chad Erickson, Superintendent. “By collaborating with families and community partners, we can extend the impact of these lessons, helping students feel empowered and supported wherever they are. We’re proud to introduce an initiative that resonates deeply with the values of our students and staff.”
