Blackfalds FCSS is looking for volunteers for its Snow Angels Program.
The initiative is designed to support seniors or those with mobility issues with snow removal.
Cara Kroetsch is volunteer programmer with FCSS.
"Currently we have 19 residents paired with a Snow Angel. In recent years we have noticed a decline in community volunteers for the program and this has led to some being placed on a waitlist."
Kroetsch says as a result they will be launching a new program this winter.
"This initiative will allow those on the waitlist, for the traditional program, to participate and participants will receive a sign that they can display in their front window or door indicating their involvement in the program."
She notes the goal of the sign program is to foster a sense of community, with the hope that neighbours will be able to help out the person needing assistance with snow removal.
Many of the volunteers who have signed up as Snow Angels are young families. Kroetsch says the program is also a great way for teenagers to build up their volunteer hours and expand their resumes.
The Snow Angel Program's ultimate goal is to allow seniors to stay in their homes longer.
"Because ultimately if they can't find somebody to help them, they're going to then look at possibly moving into a complex or somewhere that's going to be able to meet that need for them," said Kroetsch.
Those interested in becoming a Snow Angel can contact the Blackfalds FCSS office at 403-600-9066 or click here.
