Sylvan Lake Wellness and Community Connections is exploring the idea of starting up a Men's Shed group that would provide a casual space for men to connect, socialize and work on projects together.

The group held an open house on Nov. 18. The next gathering is set for Nov. 25 at 2nd Wind Brewery & Eatery (5003 Lakeshore Dr.) at 7 p.m.

A Men's Shed is a space where men get together to create, tinker, drink coffee, and tell stories. They gather to work on fun projects and help out in their community.

Originally founded in Australia in the 1990s, the grassroots Men’s Sheds movement has expanded to more than 15 countries across the globe.

The first Men's Shed in Canada was started by Doug Mackie in Manitoba. There are now about 100 Sheds across the country with provincial associations in BC, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario. The first shed in Alberta was established in Camrose. There are now close to 20 Sheds across the province.

There are many reasons why men join Men's Sheds including:

  • men with time on their hands, bored
  • retired with no plan or job
  • separated, divorced, partner died, lonely
  • downsized home, lost work area
  • unemployed, lost social network
  • underfoot at home, wives want them out
  • new to town or city
