The Portage Speed Skating Club recently celebrated a strong performance at the Short Track Provincial Championship held in Portage la Prairie. With just two years since the club started, they had four athletes compete, and they came out with some impressive wins. Hudson O'Neill earned a bronze medal, Jillian Wiebe took home a silver, and Casey O'Neill also secured a bronze, marking the club's success at the competitive level. The event saw athletes from various different regions compete.
The Portage club, which now has 14 athletes, offers both recreational and competitive programs. Coach Haylee O’Neill noted that most of their members are new to the sport, "Speed skating is a staple sport in Canada, but once kids get used to the longer, flatter blades, they really start to enjoy it."
Looking ahead, the club is gearing up for the long track season, with plans to train at the Susan Auch Oval in Winnipeg in preparation for upcoming competitions in January. For those interested in joining, the club welcomes new members throughout the season.
"So, anyone who wants to try it out can come at any point. Just let us know by emailing the club. We'll find skates in your size, and you can try it out free of charge and get a sense of what it all involves and if you like it, you can sign up."
The Portage Speed Skating Club has already hosted two competitions this year, with more events expected in the future, including short track camps and several meets planned for next fall.
