The number 2 ranked Cochrane High Cobras varsity girls volleyball team faces third-ranked St. Albert Catholic at 1 p.m. today in the ASAA 3A provincials being hosted by Ponoka.

It's the first of three games in their preliminary round that continues at 5:30 p.m. against the fourth-seeded RF Staples. Late Saturday morning they faced the top-ranked St. Joseph Catholic of Grande Prairie.

It's been another banner season for the Cobras, who are regular contenders in provincials and placed third last year.

The Cobras are coming off banner wins in the divisional and zone championships. In the regular season, they won six of seven matches, losing only to the W. H. Croxford Cavaliers, of Airdrie, whom they got redemption against in the gold medal divisional final.

Cochrane High's strong volleyball culture saw impressive results from their three other teams. The junior girls team won the divisional championship and placed second at zones. The varsity boys won silver at both divisionals and zones, while the junior boys won bronze at zones.
