The Leaf at Assiniboine Park reopens Saturday, unveiling its stunning new holiday display, Birdsong & Boughs: A Holiday Migration.
Running until January 12, the exhibit draws inspiration from the journeys of migrating birds and the homecomings of holiday travellers.
“This display beautifully combines the spirit of the season with the wonders of nature, creating a festive experience to share with family and friends,” said Gerald Dieleman, Senior Director of Horticulture at the Assiniboine Park Conservancy.
Transforming the Babs Asper Display House into this holiday haven was no small task. Over five days, the horticulture team dismantled the Yasuragi: Gardens of Japan exhibit, moved 18,500 kilograms of bricks, and planted hundreds of poinsettias.
The display now features 750 poinsettias, 500 decorative birds, and 45 birdhouses—many handcrafted by volunteers.
Visitors can explore highlights like:
- Tropical trees and birdhouses adorned with festive decor.
- A forest-like setting in the Tropical Biome, with bird-shaped holiday lights.
- Succulent wreaths and bird-friendly plants at the entrance.
- Repurposed origami cranes from the previous exhibit.
Birdsong & Boughs is included with regular admission. Tickets are time-specific and can be purchased in advance at assiniboinepark.ca.
