Guns n' Hoses hockey game returns to Morden in support of Christmas Cheer

The much-anticipated Guns and Hoses charity hockey game returns to Morden this Friday, pitting the Morden Thunder hockey team against the city's police officers and firefighters. The annual event, held at the Access Event Centre, promises an evening of fun, friendly competition, and community spirit—all in support of the Morden Christmas Cheer Board.

A cause that brings the community together

Chelsey Delaquis of Morden Christmas Cheer shared her excitement for the event:
“There's a lot of work leading up to this, but it's amazing to see the police, firefighters, and hockey team come together to support Christmas Cheer. It's a busy time of year, and their involvement is so appreciated.”

The funds and donations collected at the game will directly benefit the organization’s mission of providing Christmas hampers to families in need. Last year, Morden Christmas Cheer distributed 364 hampers, supporting over 1,000 people. This year, that number is expected to grow to nearly 400 hampers.

Father vs. Son on the ice

One of this year’s special moments is the matchup between Morden Police Service member Sean Aune and his son, Tyler, a player for the Morden Thunder. “I’ve played in past games, but this year is special because I’ll be going up against my boy,” said Sean. “It’s a fun way to give back to the community.”

Tyler, eager for the showdown, added, “I’m excited to play my dad—it’s all in good fun, but I’m hoping to beat him this year!” Despite the playful rivalry, both agree the real focus is supporting a great cause.

What to expect on game day

The Guns and Hoses game isn’t just about hockey. The evening will feature intermission games, a silent auction, 50/50 draws, and other surprises organized by the Thunder parent group. “They’ve done an incredible job planning this,” said Sean. “It’s nice that all proceeds will go directly to Morden Christmas Cheer.”

Students can attend for free with a donation, while adults receive $1 off their ticket price with a contribution. Donations of unwrapped toys, books, personal hygiene items, non-perishable food, or cash are encouraged. “Cash is especially helpful,” noted Chelsey. “It allows us to purchase whatever items are needed to fill the hampers.”

Sean echoed the sentiment: “When the community comes together, it makes everyone feel good. Let’s fill the stands and show support for this great cause.”
