A community challenge to combat hunger
The C.W. Wiebe Medical Centre in Winkler has teamed up with Menzies Medical Centre in Morden for a spirited food drive competition to support local food banks during the holiday season. Lindsey Magi, a lab technician, and Karen-Denise Cyr, Executive Director of C.W. Wiebe Medical Center joined us to share details about the initiative.
“This all started with our staff Wellness Team,” Magi explained. “It began as a clinic competition and then grew into a full-blown challenge with Menzies. We’re collecting non-perishable food and hygiene items for the Winkler & District Food Cupboard, while Menzies supports Many Hands in Morden. It’s all about seeing who can contribute the most to their community.”
Addressing community needs
The drive comes at a critical time. As Karen-Denise Cyr noted, the recent Winkler Community Foundation Vital Signs report revealed that the cost of living has surged by 18% in the last four years.
“People are making tough choices between housing, food, and other essentials,” Cyr explained. “Even in a strong community like ours, food affordability is a significant issue. We see families, seniors, and individuals working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Supporting food banks ensures everyone has access to basic nutrition, which is essential for overall health and well-being.”

How you can help
Donations of non-perishable foods such as snacks, cereal, and canned goods, as well as hygiene items like shampoo, conditioner, and feminine hygiene products, can be dropped off at the C.W. Wiebe Medical Centre, located at 385 Main Street in Winkler. The drop-off point is at the information desk, with hours running Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
“Central Station’s Food Cupboard is a fantastic resource,” Cyr highlighted. “It’s set up like a grocery store, giving people the dignity of choice when accessing food. But they rely heavily on donations, and shelves empty as quickly as they fill. This drive is an opportunity for us to come together and help keep those shelves stocked.”
The spirit of giving
With a deadline of December 13, the food drive is not only a friendly competition but also a way to spread warmth during the holiday season. Both Magi and Cyr emphasized how acts of giving uplift the entire community.
“This is a time of year when everyone deserves to feel the joy of the season,” Magi shared. “If we can help make that possible for families who might otherwise struggle, it’s worth every effort.”
Cyr added, “It’s about more than just donations. It’s about the feeling of knowing you’ve helped someone in need. That’s what the holidays are all about—coming together as a community.”
Join the challenge
Support the Medical Centre’s food drive in this friendly face-off for a worthy cause.
As Cyr summed it up: “At the end of the day, it’s not about who wins. It’s about making a difference. And when the shelves are full, everyone wins.”
