Volleyball enthusiasts in southern Manitoba have something to look forward to as the Winkler Bandits 18U volleyball team kicks off their upcoming season. The team, which brings together talented players from across the region, is ready to welcome new faces with tryouts scheduled for December.
“Club volleyball is an amazing opportunity for players to compete at a higher level outside of the school season,” explained head coach Nicole Guenther. “It’s not just about the sport—it’s about meeting new people, growing as athletes, and having fun.”
The Winkler Bandits represent a wide geographic area, with players from Altona, Morden, Gretna, and Winkler coming together to form a cohesive team. “We’re fortunate to have players who are willing to travel up to an hour to join us,” Guenther said.
What is club volleyball?
Unlike school volleyball, which runs from September to November, club volleyball begins in January and continues until May. It’s a competitive environment overseen by Volleyball Manitoba, providing players with opportunities to participate in tournaments and even national championships.
“This year, we’re looking to build a team of 12 players, along with a few practice players who will train with the team but not compete in tournaments,” Guenther said. “At the U18 level, we’re focusing on developing existing skills, so we’re looking for players with prior experience in the sport.”
Tryout and registration details
Registration for the Winkler Bandits is open until November 30th, with tryouts taking place on December 13th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Plum Coulee School. Players must register in advance, with information available on the Pembina Valley Online events calendar or by visiting the Bandits Volleyball Club website.
“Our goal is to create a team that’s competitive but also supportive,” Guenther explained. “We want players who are passionate, coachable, and eager to improve.”
The Coach’s perspective
Guenther, who has a lifelong passion for volleyball, began her journey with the sport in Grade 7 and hasn’t looked back. “I’ve played every year since then—indoor, beach, you name it,” she said. “Volleyball has always been a part of my life, and I’m happiest when I’m around the sport.”
As a coach, Guenther takes a balanced approach. “I encourage the players to have fun, but I also expect them to put in the effort. If they’re slacking, I’ll step in and push them to do better. But when they’re giving it their all, I’m their biggest cheerleader,” she said.
Looking ahead
The team will practice three evenings a week and participate in four to five tournaments during the season, including provincials and nationals. “It’s a busy time, but for those who love volleyball, it’s incredibly rewarding,” Guenther said.
With a dedicated coach and a group of passionate players, the Winkler Bandits are set to make this club volleyball season one to remember.
