Winkler Library hosts ugly Christmas sweater workshop

The holiday season is about to get a lot more creative and festive at the Winkler Library. On December 3rd, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, the library will host an "Ugly Christmas Sweater Workshop," inviting participants of all ages to unleash their inner designer.

“Ugly-cute” inspiration

Heidi Friesen, the workshop leader, stopped by the studio to share her enthusiasm. Clad in a self-made “ugly-cute” Christmas sweater dress and matching earrings, Friesen said, “It’s going to be ugly, cute, and festive. I’m in!” She encouraged participants to bring their own sweater or sweater vest to decorate. All other supplies, including garlands, pom-poms, beads, and ribbons, will be provided.

Friesen emphasized that the workshop is all about fun and creativity, noting, “It doesn’t have to be fantastic. You can grab a handful of stuff, throw it on your sweater, and where it lands is where it stays!”

A rich history of festivity

The charm of ugly Christmas sweaters goes beyond quirky fashion. Friesen shared a fun history lesson, explaining that these festive garments date back to the 1950s when they were called “Jingle Bell Sweaters.” She added, “The first ugly Christmas sweater party started in Vancouver, BC. Canadians really embraced the ‘ugly’ in these sweaters.”

Workshop details

The event is open to participants aged eight and up, with kids under 12 requiring an adult. Admission is just $5, covering supplies and holiday treats such as hot chocolate and apple cider. “We’ll also have Christmas music playing to set the mood,” Friesen said.

Spots are limited to 20 participants, so early registration is recommended. “This is a great activity for friends, siblings, or even parent-child bonding,” Friesen added.

How to join

To reserve your spot for this festive evening of creativity, visit the Winkler Library or call in advance. Don't forget to bring your own sweater, and as Friesen jokingly suggested, “Why not try something different, like an ugly Christmas blazer or even pants? The sky’s the limit!”

Whether you’re a seasoned DIY enthusiast or trying your hand at holiday crafts for the first time, this workshop promises a night of laughter, creativity, and holiday cheer.
