The accolades continue rolling in for the Portage Terriers as Portager Koy Funk was named the MJHL's Rookie of the Month for November. Funk secured the award by scored 12 points in 12 games. He shares how he found out about the award.
"I heard when I was out skating with Crescentview School, so I had a couple guys with me. They all came over, gave me fist bumps, then saw all the guys at the rink later, and it was warm all around, it was nice to feel that."
Funk notes that the community's support has been felt by the team, and himself especially.
"It's so cool just to be recognized and be in my hometown, and to have everybody around here see that we're doing good, we have guys going on the team, and just to have that recognition from my hometown as well."
The team currently sits in a tie for second place in the MGEU East Division, a single point ahead of the Selkirk Steelers and only three points behind the division leaders, the Steinbach Pistons. Funk comments that the contributions from up and down the lineup have been a significant help.
"All of us rookies have been going this year, we have a great group of rookies, vets (veterans) and 19-year-olds. The team overall is just going on all cylinders right now. We've been talking, a few us rookies, everybody's going, everybody's producing, and we're just proud of ourselves right now."
He adds that with the playoff picture being a tight race in the East, the team remains focused on getting better and improving their position.
"We know that we're in a nice spot right now, but it's not 'Coast from here,' we're taking it to them every game now. We're trying to get that top spot going as the number one seed in the playoffs hopefully and dominate the rest of the season."
