Leslie “Les” Charles Green
1926 – 2024
With sadness but gratitude for a life well-lived, the Green family announces the peaceful passing of Leslie Charles Green on November 29th, 2024, at the Douglas Campbell Lodge, at the age of 98.
Les was born in Portage in 1926, the son of Charlie and Grace Green. His father’s family had settled in the Portage Creek area in 1871 to homestead, a history that deeply shaped Les’s life and passions. He was an ardent historian, dedicated to preserving the legacy of his family and the Portage la Prairie area.
Les generously shared his love of local history through countless efforts. Drawing on an extensive collection of files, photographs, and personal recollections, he authored a history of Portage la Prairie and a history of St. Mary’s Church, as well as collaborating on the history book of the Portage Mutual and a photo book of early Portage.
His history columns in The Leader, contributions to the Portage Heritage Advisory Committee, work in preserving the CP station, and contributions to the Fort la Reine Museum were testaments to his commitment. He generously shared his time and handyman skills with the Portage Library and the Arts Centre, and enjoyed making presentations to seniors. His most recent presentation was to his co-residents at Douglas Campbell, in September of this year.
Les’s passion earned him numerous accolades for his contributions to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of Portage la Prairie. In 2003, Les was named “Portage la Prairie’s Arts and Culture Person of the Year” and in 2011 he received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Historical Preservation and Promotion. He collaborated with the Portage Heritage Advisory Committee which won the Margaret McWilliams Competition for their book “Historic Photographs of Portage la Prairie” in 2020.
Writing was a joy and a gift Les shared widely. From his humorous “Well, Patrick” column in the Senior paper to his insightful East End Report in the Daily Graphic, he delighted readers with wit and thoughtful commentary. He cherished the connection he found with his readers, who often encouraged and inspired him.
Les’s commitment to community extended to his lifelong involvement in Scouting. A Cub at the age of eight, he later became a Cub leader and stayed involved as an organizer and trainer. In retirement, he cared for the Scout Camp at Delta Beach, embodying the Cub promise to “do a good turn daily.”
Faith was central to Les’s life. A devoted member of First Baptist Church, he served as Church Clerk and Treasurer for many years and fulfilled a personal ambition of printing, by producing the church’s weekly bulletins for over 25 years.
In 1949, Les married Shirley Lewis of Sperling, a former teacher and nurse, and together they raised three children: Laurel, Tim and Chris. Les and Shirley enjoyed “trailering” and then took great delight in achieving their dream - a Delta cottage.
After Shirley’s passing, Les’s life took a different turn, as he married his widowed sister-in-law, Gwen Green. Together, they led an active social life centered on new friends, dancing, and many “special occasions”. After Gwen passed, Les found companionship and support with their friend Margaret Schnurr.
Les’s creativity and resourcefulness were legendary. Whether crafting toys and decorations for his children and grandchildren, building models of Portage landmarks, or showcasing his photography at the Arts Centre, Les brought beauty, ingenuity, and joy to all he created. His beloved workshop was a hub of activity where he designed solutions and crafted memories.
After 43 years of service, Les retired in 1990 as Senior Underwriter at Portage Mutual. He often reflected on his early days as a desk clerk at the Mayfair Hotel after WWII, humorously calling it an education in itself.
Les was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley (Lewis) in 1995; his second wife, Gwen (Burtonshaw/Green) in 2002; his brother, Walter Green; his sister, Marjorie Hanishewski; nephew Rick Green; and niece Donna Lewis.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: Laurel (Rob Sarginson), Tim Green, and Chris Green (Joyce Slater); grandchildren: Patrick Sarginson (Jordana Greenberg), Claire Sarginson, Leandra Grenier-Green (Dave Mogavero) Charles-André Grenier-Green, Kate Green (Amadeus Lackmanec), and Jesse Green; great-grandsons Ari Sigvaldason and Drew Sarginson; his many nephews, nieces, and dear friend Margaret Schnurr.
Despite the challenges of contracting polio as a teenager, Les embodied resilience, humor, and curiosity. He was a dedicated family man, mentor, storyteller, carpenter, gardener, historian, and friend. His remarkable ability to adapt and embrace life’s changes, including using his computer well into his later years, was inspiring.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at Douglas Campbell Lodge, especially Kristi, Michelle, Lloyd, and Vanessa.
Donations in Les’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 220 Duke Ave, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0S6, the First Baptist Church,102 3 St SE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1M5, the Fort la Reine Museum, 2652 Saskatchewan Ave E, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3Z9, and the CPR Heritage Park.
