A text message scam targeting Airdrie residents earlier this year has resurfaced, affecting other parts of Alberta, including Vermilion.

Vermilion RCMP are warning the public about fraudulent messages claiming a vehicle has been detected speeding and directing recipients to a website to pay a supposed fine.

"Vermilion RCMP have received reports of a scam circulating throughout Alberta. The scam involves the victim receiving a text message stating that their vehicle has been detected exceeding the speed limit and has a link to a website to pay a ticket," RCMP stated.

Authorities are urging residents not to click the link or make any payments through the fraudulent website.

"Vermilion RCMP wants to remind the public that government and police organizations do not issue tickets via text messaging. If you receive suspicious text messages, do not reply or click links," the RCMP added.

The RCMP also advise contacting the organization or individual directly if you are unsure whether a message or phone call is legitimate.

This scam mirrors fraudulent activity reported in Airdrie earlier this year. DiscoverAirdrie reported that residents were receiving similar text messages falsely claiming speeding violations in March.

At the time, Airdrie RCMP and Municipal Enforcement reminded residents that speeding tickets are only issued by mail and never through text or email.
