The binding arbitration process between the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) and the provincial government officially began on Monday, marking the latest chapter in a prolonged labour dispute. The proceedings, held in Saskatoon, are set to continue until Dec. 20.

This step comes after more than a year and a half of failed contract negotiations and escalating job action. Talks initially began in May 2023, but negotiations over key issues such as compensation, class size, and class complexity broke down. Despite multiple attempts to reach an agreement, STF members rejected each tentative deal brought forward throughout the year.

In June, both parties formally agreed to binding arbitration after ongoing deliberations failed to resolve the impasse. The arbitration process involves three mediators: one appointed by the STF, one by the Government of Saskatchewan, and a neutral third party. Together, they will craft a legally binding decision to form the next collective bargaining agreement.

Tensions have been high throughout the negotiation process, which included a series of job actions, culminating in strikes earlier this year in January.

The outcome of the arbitration will have significant implications for teachers, students, and the province’s education system as a whole.
