As the clock ticks down to 2024, millions are already drafting their New Year's resolutions lists and predictably, getting fit remains at the top.
January is often a pivotal month for fitness enthusiasts and beginners alike.
"There's always an uptick in the new year," says Whitney Johnson, Owner of Barre Star Fitness. "While the first week might be slow as families wrap up holiday festivities, enthusiasm gains momentum by mid-January."
Gyms and fitness studios often witness an influx of new members eager to kickstart their health journeys.
The surge in interest isn't just about weight loss. People are increasingly focused on improving overall health, building stamina, and fostering mental well-being. However, Johnson notes that maintaining momentum through the winter months can be challenging due to shorter days and colder weather. To combat this, she emphasizes the importance of accountability.
"Find a workout buddy or a group class—it makes a difference when someone's counting on you to show up. Ease into it and be patient with yourself."
She also stresses the importance of nutrition as a complement to fitness. While not a nutritionist, Johnson highlights the benefits of balanced eating for achieving fitness goals. Johnson suggests experimenting with different activities to discover what feels enjoyable.
"If you don't love it after a few weeks, try something else."
Johnson offers some simple advice: show up and take the first step.
"The hardest part is walking through that door. Once you're there, it gets easier."
She encourages treating workouts like any other appointment, something non-negotiable in your schedule.
