The Saskatchewan Roughriders have added some potential insurance to the quarterback room.

On Monday, the Roughriders acquired the playing rights for Jake Maier from the Calgary Stampeders in exchange for a conditional 8th round pick in the 2025 CFL Draft.

Maier was the Stampeders starting quarterback for the last two seasons, taking over the reins from Bo Levi Mitchell.

In 2023, during his first season as the Stamps starting QB, he had 4,244 yards and 15 touchdowns.

This past season, Maier had 3,841 yards (third in the CFL) and 22 touchdowns (third) while also earning a 72.3-per cent completion rate.

He is eligible to become a free agent in February, but now the Roughriders can negotiate a new contract with the 27-year-old.

Earlier this month, Saskatchewan resigned starting quarterback Trevor Harris to a new contract.
