The Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation is excited about the construction progress on the new hospital on Fifth Avenue north.
President Jeff Hayward said it is about 60 percent complete so far, and Wright Construction is on track.
"Things are moving right along there," he said. "They've run a fairly tight ship from what I can see and what I've heard."
Hayward said the goal is for the construction to be completed by late 2025, and opening the new hospital in the summer of 2026.
Fundraising continues to go well, he noted, thanks to the support of the community. Not only do businesses make contributions throughout the year, but the WDHF held two major fundraisers in 2024, with over $30,000 being raised in November at their Casino Night. The event was sponsored by Wright Construction.
The funds raised at this point will be ongoing, to ensure the current hospital has equipment upgrades, and the new hospital has what it needs in the future.
"We're continuing to raise money for new equipment to go in the hospital to make sure everything state-of-the-art when the building opens. We will remain on, because, as you know, equipment does wear out. So it'll be the continued mandate of the foundation to continue to support and raise money for new equipment to keep that hospital state-of-the-art, which the Weyburn community and area so deservedly expect in this area."
He pointed out that any equipment that can be moved from the old Weyburn General Hospital to the new one will be transferred, "But the fundraising is to make sure we get the state-of-the-art new equipment that'll go into that new hospital."
Hayward said their stable board of 12 has the help of numerous volunteers for events, which includes members of the local service groups.
"It's been a long time coming to get a new hospital here. But it's very well deserved to the Weyburn area community, and thank you again for all your support."
