The Wetaskiwin RCMP received a report of an assault at a rural home on Township Road 441 in Wetaskiwin County.
After attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful, RCMP contained the residence and the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team was deployed to assist.
A warrant was obtained to enter the home and arrest the suspect.
When entering the home, officers were shot at by the suspect.
Police continued efforts to de-escalate the situation.
After several hours the suspect surrendered and was safely taken into custody.
The suspect was treated for a minor injury and taken to cells.
The Wetaskiwin General Investigation Section took carriage of the investigation. RCMP have charged 34-year-old Eric Dylan Dixon with:
- Attempted murder with a firearm;
- Resist peace officer;
- Firearm offences (x4);
- Assault;
- Forcible confinement;
- Uttering threats.
Dixon was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody with his next court date set for Jan. 9 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin.
No officers were injured during the incident.

Wetaskiwin RCMP lifted the shelter place in the County area around Township 441 as there are no further threats to the public.
There were no injuries to the police or public.
The investigation continues into this matter. No charges have been laid at this point.

Original Story:
On Dec. 30 at 8:39 p.m., the Wetaskiwin RCMP advised residents along Township Road 441 between Range Road 224 and 822 in the County of Wetaskiwin to shelter in place.
RCMP were responding to an unfolding event where the subject involved is believed to be in possession of firearms.
Residents of the area were asked to remain indoors, lock their residences and stay away from windows while officers respond.
Residents are asked to avoid posting photos of responding officers on social media or those stationary in this vicinity.
