The Winnipeg Police Service’s (WPS) Major Crimes Unit is investigating several alarming reports of animal cruelty that emerged in December 2024, involving the discovery of deceased cats under suspicious circumstances.

In three separate incidents, approximately six deceased cats were found by citizens who regularly frequent an area near the Summit Road bridge for recreational activities.

Some of the animals were left in bags or placed directly on the path under the bridge. Police confirmed signs of foul play were evident in these cases.

Details of the Incidents

General Patrol officers responded to the reports, meeting with those who discovered the animals and coordinating follow-ups with the Winnipeg Humane Society and Animal Services.

Investigators noted that some of the animals had pet identifiers, and efforts are underway to trace their ownership.

The specific incidents include:

  • December 8 (Case Number: C240286753): Deceased cats were found under the Summit Road bridge, north of Summit and Saskatchewan.
  • December 28 (Case Number: C240302163): Similar circumstances were reported in the same location.
  • December 30 (Case Number: R240063380): Another discovery was made under the Summit Road bridge.

Police acknowledge previous reports of deceased cats in the Point Douglas area, though it is unclear at this time if those cases are related to these recent events.
