The Morden Family Resource Centre (MFRC) is gearing up for an exciting start to 2025 with a lineup of winter programs designed to engage and support families with young children. Registration for these programs opens Monday, January 6th, at 9:00 AM, with classes beginning mid-January.
Connecting families through learning and fun
The MFRC, known for its community-focused approach, offers free programs tailored for preschoolers and their caregivers. Executive Director Jen Froese highlights the variety of offerings available this winter, including "Mindful Munchkins," a preschool mental health program aimed at helping children identify and manage emotions.
“We’re really focusing on equipping kids with skills to express and understand their feelings,” Froese explains. “It’s about setting a strong emotional foundation early on.”
Other programs include "Let’s Make Music," which introduces preschoolers to singing, dancing, and playing instruments, and "I Love to Read," designed to ignite a passion for literacy in young learners. A new addition, "Fit Kids Health," led by physiotherapist Rebecca Atkinson, emphasizes physical activity in a fun, supportive environment.
Drop-in sessions for parents and babies
In addition to structured programs, the Centre is introducing a new drop-in session for parents and babies up to 18 months old. Held Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 at Morden Alliance Church, this initiative offers a chance for parents to connect, enjoy snacks and coffee, and share experiences.
“It’s a great way for parents to build community,” says Froese. “Especially during these cold months, it’s important to have a reason to get out of the house and meet others in similar stages of life.”
Educational resources beyond programs
The MFRC also provides unique resources like the “Busy Binder,” part of their lending library. These educational kits feature interactive activities such as shape and color matching, designed to keep children engaged and learning while parents tackle daily tasks.
“These binders are an excellent alternative to screen time,” Froese notes. “They’re not only fun but also help prepare kids for kindergarten with activities focused on numbers, letters, and problem-solving.”
Trivia night returns for fans of "The Big Bang Theory"
The MFRC isn’t just about early childhood development. For fans of hit TV show "The Big Bang Theory", the Centre is hosting its second annual trivia night on Monday, January 20th, at Rendezvous in Morden. Tickets are $80 per team, with up to six members per team. Doors open at 6:00 PM, and the event starts at 7:00 PM.
“Last year’s Friends-themed trivia night was a huge success,” Froese shares. “This year, we’re diving into Sheldon Cooper’s universe. It’s a great way to have fun and support the Centre.”
