Roderick Merle Gladue
1968 - 2024
It is with deep sadness that our family announces the unexpected passing of Roderick Merle Gladue, age 56, on December 29, 2024, at the Health Science Centre (MICU) in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Roderick, known as” Rod” to his many friends and loved ones, was born on January 26, 1968 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, at the Portage General Hospital. Roderick grew up in the Overhill district and attended school at Portage Collegiate Institute and RRC Polytech Stevenson Campus.
Rod’s life was marked by his boundless passion for life, adventure, and service to his community. He was a skilled heavy-duty mechanic, starting his career at Stevenson Aviation in Southport before bringing his expertise to E.F. Moon. He also owned his own business, Rod’s Renos, where he shared his exceptional craftmanship and dedication. Rod’s ability to fix anything and his attention to detail were legendary, earning him respect from those who knew him.
Rod had an unwavering love for horses, which began in his childhood. He became a Cowboy at heart, earning the title of Cowboy of the Year and receiving a belt buckle from the Heartland Rodeo Association. A proud rodeo judge, Rod also served as the National Director for the Manitoba High School Rodeo Association. One of the greatest accomplishments was bringing the Portage Stampede back in 2017, a testament to his dedication and leadership in the rodeo community. Rod’s influence extended beyond his professional achievements; he was an inspiration to his peers and an unflinching leader within his rodeo family.
Rod’s passion extended beyond rodeos and horses. He loved the outdoors, from ice fishing to hunting, and was a long-time volunteer for the Portage Wildlife Club. He also was very proud of his Metis culture. He has been long time member and volunteer for The Manitoba Metis Federation, where he also shared his knowledge and passion for hunting. A man of adventure with a “gypsy soul,” Rod lived life on his terms and embraced every moment. His care for others was evident in his service to his family and community. He always had time to chat and was known for his ability to make everyone feel special. He was proud of his family and would do anything for them. Above all, Rod admired and looked up to his father, Merle, who was his Hero.
Rod is survived by his partner Lana Biberdorf of Portage la Prairie, his daughter Lisa Marie Gladue of Winnipeg MB, his father Merle Gladue (Step-Mom Sue Pickett), his brother Philip Gladue of Carberry, MB, his sister Gail Gladue (Russell Ratz) and his niece Jayda, nephew Tristen and his great-niece Maelynn all of Portage la Prairie. He is also deeply mourned by his best friends Jack Meseyton, Mike Sharp, and Gord Adams.
Rod was predeceased by his mother, Mary-lou Gladue (Mckay), and his sister, Crystal Gladue.
A Memorial Service will be held in Rod’s honor on January 7th, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the MNP Building on Island Park, Portage la Prairie, MB. The service will begin with a Cowboy Prayer and a eulogy by his dear friend, Rod Manchester.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Manitoba High School Rodeo Association in his memory.
A private burial for the family will take place in the spring. Rod would consider all his friends as Honorary Pallbearers.
Rod’s memory will live on through the countless lives he touched, his love for his family and his legacy within the rodeo and outdoor communities. His passion for life, his adventurous spirit, and his willingness to help others will be deeply missed. But never forgotten.
