REV. JAMES EDWARD PENHALE
After a lengthy struggle with numerous health issues, Jim passed away at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, on December 19, 2024. He was 82.
Jim is survived by his sister Linda Penhale; former wife Irene Onuch and their son Derek Penhale; wife Lorna Nelson Penhale, stepsons Robert and Corbin Nelson and three grandchildren.
Jim was born in Toronto to James and Gertrude Penhale on September 28, 1942. Following high school, Jim earned diplomas from Ryerson Technical Institute (Business Administration) and the Toronto Centre for Christian Studies (Christian Education).
After serving for a time as a Diaconal Minister, Jim earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, then in 1980, his Master of Divinity from Queen's Theological College, Kingston.
In his 40-plus years of ministry, Jim served several Ontario congregations of the United Church of Canada, including Burlington, Princeton and Consecon.
Following ordination in 1980, and a move to Manitoba, Jim served congregations in Rivers, the Neepawa Area Larger Parish, Sturgeon Creek (Winnipeg), Morden/Darlingford, Holland/Cypress River and, finally, Graysville, a 45-minute drive from Portage la Prairie where he and Lorna had purchased a home in 2004.
Among Jim's loves were drama, music, family camping trips and "messing about with computers", but at nature photography he was truly gifted.
Family members will gather privately later in the year to commemorate his life.
