Winter in Winkler just got a whole lot more exciting, thanks to the Sled Library at Parkland Hill. The innovative initiative, spearheaded by City of Winkler Recreation Programmer Meg Dias, provides free access to sleds for residents and visitors, ensuring everyone can enjoy the joys of tobogganing—no equipment required.

“The hill has been used for years for tobogganing, but we saw a need to make it more accessible,” Dias explains. “This is for people who might not have their own sleds or are new to the activity. It’s a way to ensure everyone can get outside and enjoy winter.”

A simple yet effective idea

The concept was inspired by the City of Selkirk, which operates a similar program. Dias reached out to Selkirk for insights before bringing the idea to Winkler. “My husband first mentioned it after seeing Selkirk’s sled library online,” Dias said. “I emailed them to learn about potential challenges, like dealing with broken sleds, and then we adapted the concept for Parkland Hill.”

The rules are simple: use the sleds on site, return them to the sled bin, and set broken ones aside. The city takes care of repairs and replacements. “We do regular inventory to ensure the sleds are in good condition,” Dias adds.

A hill alive with activity

On a recent frosty morning, Dias was thrilled to see the hill bustling with activity. “I saw a school group using the sleds. It was so colorful with all the sleds and snowsuits. It’s awesome to see people moving in the winter.”.

The Sled Library isn’t just for kids. Parents often gather with hot drinks in hand to watch their children, and even pets have joined the fun. “Winter can feel long, especially after Christmas,” Dias notes. “This initiative encourages families to get outside, stay active, and connect with others.”

While the Sled Library is free to use, it comes with costs. The city covers expenses for sled replacements and maintenance, but the program isn’t a source of income. “It’s really about investing in the community and promoting active lifestyles,” Dias says.
