Pilot Mound gears up to host RME Women of the Rings Curling Championship
Pilot Mound, Manitoba, population 675, is set to make history as the smallest community ever to host a Provincial curling championship. From January 22nd to 26th, the RME Women of the Rings Curling Championship, formerly the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, will bring the Province’s top women’s teams to this small town’s unique curling facility.
“This is something we’ve always wanted,” says event co-chair Travis Saban. “Our arena has a different layout, and it’s perfect for an event like this. We’re beyond ecstatic to finally bring such a prestigious championship to Pilot Mound.”
Community spirit shines bright
The tight-knit community has rallied behind the event with unparalleled enthusiasm. “People asked if we’d have trouble finding volunteers, but they don’t know small towns,” Saban shares. “We have about 140 volunteers ready to help, from preparing food to maintaining the ice and working shifts in the Rockies Lounge.”
The Rockies Lounge, a lively addition to the event, will feature live entertainment, including Grant Lightshaft’s one-man band on Friday and the popular band Tanglebox on Saturday. “It’s going to be a great atmosphere for everyone, whether you’re a die-hard curling fan or just coming out to enjoy the community vibe,” Saban adds.
Top talent and local pride
The championship will showcase the best in Manitoba women’s curling, including top-seeded Kate Cameron, ranked seventh in Canada, and Beth Peterson, ranked eighth. “These two are proven shot-makers, and we’re sure they’ll be there on the final weekend,” Saban notes.
Adding to the excitement is local favorite Cheyenne Ehnes from Manitou, who will compete alongside her team. “Having her here with local support is going to be amazing,” Saban says.
Affordable fun for all
The event offers flexible ticket options, including a $150 event pass for the week, $40 day passes, and $20 tickets for the last draw of the day. “We wanted to make it accessible for everyone,” Saban explained. Tickets are available online at www.rmepilotmound.com and locally at Keystone Insurance in Pilot Mound.
In true small-town fashion, the event will also feature daily hot lunch specials, homemade soups, and curling-fan favorites like tacos in a bag. “It’s all made by our incredible volunteers,” Saban says.
