On cold days like this, Manitoba Hydro would like to remind the public never to plug in a vehicle inside a garage.
Spokesperson Peter Chura says there have been a number of garage fires in our province already this year that are related to block heaters and extension cords. Manitoba Hydro says though block heaters keep cars running in the winter, they can be dangerous if not properly used.
"Don't plug in your vehicle inside the garage," warns Chura. "Fires inside the garage are very dangerous."
He notes if a fire starts in your garage, particularly while you are asleep, it can spread quickly to your home before you notice it. Not only can this result in a lot of damage, but it can also be very dangerous.
According to Manitoba Hydro, before using an extension cord, you should check it for damage. This includes inspecting the ends and looking for wear along the entire length of the cord. If the insulation around a cord is worn out and wires are showing through, it is best to replace it, and not just tape it.
Manitoba Hydro also reminds the public that a cord can be damaged even if it does not look like it. If you have driven over your cord or pulled out of your driveway with it still plugged in, it is a good idea to replace it.
Also, extension cords should only be used outdoors if they are rated for outdoor use. And they should never exceed their wattage ratings.
Manitoba Hydro also reminds the public not to coil a cord as it can overheat and cause fires. Cords should be fully extended when in use.
Cords should also not be run under mats or rugs.
"If you are running your cord any place where it's going to get frayed, it's going to get pressed, you might get away with it one time or for a while, but there is always the risk that you are going to cause damage to that cord and then you could wind up with an arc or a spark that's going to cause a fire in your garage," says Chura.
