The program involves law enforcement officers patrolling neighbourhoods, checking on idling, unattended vehicles to ensure they are secure, and educating the public on theft prevention.

"Leaving your vehicle running to keep it warm for you seems convenient, and it is — not just for you, but also for opportunistic thieves who are looking for vehicles to steal for transportation and to commit additional crimes," said Cpl—Mike Black of the Alberta RCMP’s auto theft unit.

Recent incidents in Airdrie and Crossfield have underscored the importance of vehicle security. Between Jan. 16 and Jan. 17, Airdrie RCMP responded to six stolen vehicles and several related car prowlings in residential areas. In all cases, vehicles had been left idling with keys or push-start systems activated.

On Jan. 17, Airdrie RCMP, with assistance from Calgary police, located one of the stolen vehicles and arrested a female driver for possessing stolen property.

To prevent similar incidents, RCMP reminds residents to take precautions, including using a remote starter or remaining in the vehicle while it warms up. Drivers should never leave keys in an unattended vehicle, and push-button-start vehicles can still be driven without the key present. Parking in a visible, well-lit area and using anti-theft devices, such as steering wheel locks, are also recommended.

The Alberta RCMP notes that vehicle thefts don’t only affect individual owners. Stolen vehicles are often linked to further crimes, can increase insurance costs, and may be fraudulently resold.
