A Swift Current Comp. Colts linebacker is off to the City of Bridges to join the illustrious Saskatoon Hilltops.
Zachary Potter was the first player in 2025 to commit to the Canadian Junior Football League's (CJFL) Hilltops.
The graduating Colt said a few key factors influenced his decision on the next steps for his football career.
"One of the most important things is the coaching," he said. "They probably have the most wins out of any CJFL team, so I know that their team is good, I know that their coaches are good. The other thing is that it's close to home so my family can watch the games as well."
The Hilltops have won a record-setting 18 CJFL titles since 1974, with their most recent in 2023. Tom Sargeant the team's head coach has led the club to 14 titles in his 26 years at the helm. He enjoyed Potter's play at the summer camp and the Hilltops grade 12 combine.
"He wanted me to commit right there (at the combine)," he said. "It's kind of unreal. It made me think about where my future could be one day. My goal is to go pro, hopefully CFL."
Potter also plays for the Sask Selects program, which is based in Moose Jaw. He hopes the extra reps will help him prove the coach's eye for top-tier talent is still there.
"I'm hoping I can be someone, that in the first year out on special teams ready to hit someone," he said. "I'm hoping to be a leader for the defence, hopefully, one day for the team."
Potter plans to take a year off from school to decide which career he'd like to pursue.
