The Alberta RCMP encourages residents across the province, including Airdrie, to join citizen-led crime prevention groups to help build safer, stronger communities. At the same time, the Airdrie RCMP is promoting the RAVE Mobile Safety system to help residents stay informed.
"No one knows a community as well as its residents," said Chief Superintendent Peter Tewfik, Officer in Charge of Community Safety and Well-being. "These volunteer-led organizations are our partners. They act as an extra set of eyes and ears in their neighbourhoods and work closely with their local Alberta RCMP detachments. They assist police by promoting crime prevention education, reporting suspicious or criminal activity, and strengthening relationships between police and the community."
Several citizen-led groups in Airdrie and nearby areas offer opportunities for residents to contribute to crime prevention efforts:
- Airdrie Citizens on Patrol Society (ACOPS): Volunteers patrol neighbourhoods, observe, and report suspicious activities.
- Okotoks Area Rural Crime Watch Association: Focuses on awareness, property security, and reporting suspicious activity.
- Citizens on Patrol Okotoks Society: Trains volunteers to patrol and report unlawful activities.
- Olds Rural Crime Watch and Carstairs: Promotes safety education and property security in rural areas.
- Carstairs Citizens on Patrol Society: Volunteers assist law enforcement by patrolling and reporting suspicious activities.
"Everything begins in our communities," said Jean Bota, Executive Director of the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association. "When strong, engaged citizen-led groups work alongside law enforcement, we harness tremendous citizen power to create meaningful change."
In addition to these efforts, the Airdrie RCMP is encouraging local residents to register for the RAVE Mobile Safety system. The web-based platform is designed to provide real-time alerts to enhance community safety and awareness.
The Airdrie RCMP stated that users can register online and select the regions for which they wish to receive alerts and the type of notifications they want. Available notifications include:
- Traffic advisories;
- Crime watch alerts;
- Crime prevention tips;
- Requests for public assistance; and
- General public safety messaging.
The Airdrie RCMP added that residents can choose to receive alerts via email, text message, or phone call, depending on their preferences.
Residents in Airdrie and across the province are encouraged to connect with local citizen-led crime prevention groups and stay informed using tools like the RAVE system. The Airdrie RCMP stated that residents can sign up for RAVE alerts by downloading the Alberta RCMP mobile app on Apple or Android devices and selecting the RAVE icon.
