Blowing snow and the bitter cold has been the main story for the weather forecast around the Humboldt area throughout January.

While both elements will appear this weekend, it will be temporary, and above seasonal temperatures are on the horizon.

A fresh batch descended last night, and despite some heavy winds, Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Dan Fulton says the blowing snow shouldn’t be as severe as we’ve seen in recent weeks.

“There’s flurries out there, but there’s also quite a few clear breaks.”

Fulton added conditions should be good for the morning, but more flurries are expected later in the day.

“A little bit more organized flurries in the afternoon and then we will see some blowing snow on the highways, I don’t think it will be too bad in the Humboldt area.”

Fulton believes the west-central area of the province, west of Saskatoon, will experience a heavier activity of blowing snow on Friday.

A cold front is expected to move into the region later in the day, pushing temperatures down to -18°C, with the windchill it will feel like -28°C.

The good news, Fulton says a warmup is expected to begin as soon as Saturday.

“Not bad for Saturday, we’re looking for a high of -8°C, we’re into the cold air, but only for a little bit, because -8°C is actually warmer than this time of year, normal (highs) are -12°C, kind of a cold night, but recovery on Saturday.”

A bonus is that the above seasonal average should last throughout next week, temperatures are expected to be above 0°C starting on Sunday, and possibly moving above 0°C on Monday, even when temperatures dip at the end of the week, Fulton suspects that they should remain above the seasonal average for the end of January.
