The Nestaweya River Trail has officially reached its full 6-kilometre length, connecting Hugo Docks on the Assiniboine River to Churchill Drive on the Red River.
Crews began opening sections of the trail on December 31, gradually extending it along the Assiniboine before completing the path on the Red River over the past two weeks. With barriers now removed from the final section, skaters, walkers, and winter enthusiasts can enjoy the full length of this Winnipeg winter favourite.
So far, nearly 1,000 metres of the trail have been 'adopted' by individuals to help cover the cost of maintenance. It's part of a campaign The Forks Foundation started this year called "Trail Together."
Six new Warming Huts were also unveiled on Friday and will soon be placed along the trail.
The Warming Huts, which have become a beloved part of the Nestaweya River Trail experience, offer unique designs for visitors to admire and explore.
The Forks reminds visitors to stay on the marked trail for safety, as only the official route is tested for ice conditions. To stay informed about skating and ice conditions, visit www.theforks.com/skate.
