A man and dog are dead, and another remains in critical condition following an incident involving carbon monoxide poisoning in Winnipeg’s Fort Rouge neighbourhood.
The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a medical call around 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the 600 block of Nassau Street South, where a vehicle had become stuck in a snowbank. Inside the vehicle, crews discovered an unconscious 84-year-old man, a 67-year-old man, and a dog.
The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) was notified of the incident at approximately 2:14 p.m., prompting an investigation.
Officers from the West District General Patrol confirmed the dog had died at the scene.
Both men were transported to hospital in critical condition, where the 84-year-old succumbed to his injuries. The 67-year-old remains in hospital.
Police say the deaths are believed to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning due to a snow-blocked exhaust pipe. The incident is not considered suspicious.
In a statement, the WPS urged the public to take precautions when operating vehicles in snowy conditions. Drivers are reminded to clear exhaust pipes of snow and ensure proper ventilation if idling a vehicle for extended periods, particularly when stuck or warming up in confined spaces like garages.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that can cause serious injury or death. The WPS is urging residents to remain vigilant to prevent further tragedies.
