Work is being done to help establish a local 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride committee in the Watrous and Manitou Beach area.
Dustin Hallborg is leading the initiative and said after helping as Treasurer for the Saskatchewan Pride Network he felt inspired to start a local chapter in the Watrous and Manitou Beach area.
“I’m happy to see what they do and I’m looking to get a bit more activity out here.”
At this point, a local pride group is in its infancy stages, as Hallborg says the focus is to create a committee and then from there go on to plan some events.
Hallborg acknowledged that he would like to see some events coincide with Pride Month in June, adding with the artistic background around Watrous and Manitou Beach, there are a lot of possibilities.
“There’s a lot of great opportunities in the local area here for events to happen whether that’s the Heritage Centre or similar venues,” said Hallborg.
“There’s the world our oyster out here, we’re blessed to have such a diverse community that offers lots of opportunities.”
Hallborg hopes to organize a meeting sometime in early February to begin the formation of a group in the Watrous area. He also notes that there aren’t really any requirements for joining the group, whether an individual is a member of 2SLGBTQIA+, or they are just an ally who is looking to help.
So far, Hallborg has received interest about a local pride chapter from the Imperial and Simpson area along with some individuals residing in the Young area. He noted with organizations already established in both Saskatoon and Humboldt, he’s not looking to expand into those areas. Hallborg adds that you don’t have to be a full-time resident of the area to join.
“Whether it’s people that live here all year long or if it’s people that just have a cabin down at Manitou Beach and only come down during the summer, we’re kind of happy to have everyone, no matter where you’re from.”
