A fitness journey is more than a series of workouts. It’s the people you meet along the way. Warehouse Spin & Fitness owner Becky Urban knows this first-hand, which is why her Airdrie business values relationships as much as working up a good sweat.
“Back in 2015, I had just gone through a divorce and needed an outlet, so I turned to fitness and was doing the online beach body stuff,” she recalls. “It was fun and all, but I needed other people. So I became a personal trainer and realized I loved it.”
Urban worked at Good Life and then at a local cycling studio. Then the pandemic hit. She continued doing spin classes in her basement but missed the social component. So, in 2023 she opened Warehouse Spin & Fitness at 529 Gateway Rd NE. She was so excited that she didn’t even remember teaching the first Warehouse spin class.
“I’m biased, but I think we have the most amazing community,” she says. “Everybody’s so supportive of each other. At some big box gyms, you walk in and you’re intimidated and uncomfortable. With us, you come through the door and 99% of the time it’s my face you see. We’ll welcome you, get you set up on your bike and make sure you feel comfortable and are set up for success.”
In addition to spin, Warehouse Spin & Fitness offers classes in pilates, barre, HIIT, step, buti yoga and yin yoga, as well as combo classes. There’s something for everybody – and, as Urban likes to say, for everybody.
“This isn’t the crazy Instagram spin where people’s legs are going a thousand miles a minute and they’re doing 75-step choreo,” she explains. “You can take a class and make it your own. You’re on that bike; you’re in control of the resistance style. Us instructors are up there asking you to do certain things, but you’re fully in control. If you just want to sit and pedal, do it. If you don’t want to do the choreo, that’s totally okay.”
The benefit of doing the class in a dark room, she adds, is that no one’s watching anyone else. Participants are only competing with themselves. And no matter one’s height or body type, they can ride the bikes.
“It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done fitness in years, or if you’re an avid fitness person,” she says. “We’ll make it work for everybody.”
Urban understands how popular spin videos on social media can make the activity seem intimidating, so she points out that Warehouse goes slower, doesn’t add as much choreo and, crucially, is centred around a supportive community.
“No one is here to judge you,” she says. “My favourite thing about spin is it doesn’t matter how I walk into a class, because I always walk out feeling amazing.”
For those on the fence about trying spin or any of the other classes at Warehouse, their Intro Offer allows for two weeks of unlimited classes for $49 (plus GST).
“It’s a great place to start because I realize spin isn’t everyone’s jam,” says Urban. “That’s why we have other classes, too. Worst case scenario: you hate spin but you find barre, Pilates or something else. Or, maybe just a community you love being a part of.”
