Morden’s Multicultural Winterfest is set to feature an expanded ice sculpture component, with organizers preparing for an impressive display of frozen artistry. Jennifer Smirl, Executive Director of the Pembina Hills Arts Council is excited to share more about this addition.
“We’ve had ice sculptures at Winter Fest before, but this is the first year it’s really becoming an official part of the event,” says Smirl. “I’m new to organizing it, so I’m just running with it this year, but we’re excited to see how it all comes together.”

Harvesting ice from lake Minnewasta
One of the most unique aspects of this year’s sculptures is the source of the ice—Lake Minnewasta.
“We have a great crop of ice this year, and a fantastic crew harvesting blocks from the lake,” Smirl explains. “It’s a touch-and-go process, but we’re excited to have high-quality ice for the carvers.”
Local experts, including Peter Hargraves from Sputnik Architecture, will be leading the sculpting efforts with specialized equipment.
“You can’t just use a butter knife for this,” Smirl jokes. “It takes skill, experience, and the right tools.”
A team effort
The ice carving initiative is spearheaded by Earl Funk and James Friesen, both of whom have played a key role in organizing and executing the event.
“They’ve been instrumental in putting this together year after year,” says Smirl. “Along with an incredible crew, including Levi from Elite Crushing, and the support of Lake Manager Brian Thiessen, they’re making sure everything runs smoothly.”
Adding to the excitement, renowned carver Barry Dueck—known for his stunning eagle sculpture on Thornhill Street—will be creating an ice sculpture in front of Bella’s Castle.

An interactive experience for the community
Visitors will have the opportunity to watch professional and local teams sculpting live on Saturday, February 8th.
“Yes, we want everybody to come out and watch,” says Smirl. “We have a mix of professional carvers and local teams, and with only about 10 blocks of ice available, it’s going to be an exclusive experience.”
The ice will be harvested in advance, with teams working tirelessly to ensure a smooth process.
With the combination of talent, community spirit, and winter magic, this year’s Winter Fest promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who attend.
