Didsbury Peace Officers issued 40 warnings in one hour on Tuesday morning at a four-way stop near a local high school as part of an enforcement and education campaign.

The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) lists failing to stop correctly as one of the most common driver errors and an automatic failure on a road test. Alberta law requires drivers to:

  • Stop before the line. If there’s no line, stop before the marked crosswalk or within three metres of the intersection.
  • Come to a full stop. Rolling stops are a violation.
  • Follow right-of-way rules—the first vehicle to stop moves first. If two cars arrive simultaneously, the driver on the right goes first. Left-turning cars must yield to oncoming traffic.

Officers are currently issuing warnings, but enforcement may escalate to fines for stop sign violations.

Drivers must make a full stop, obey right-of-way rules, and stay alert at intersections.
