A chance meeting

Bernie recalls the first time he met Darlene: "I was nine years old when we moved to Winkler," he begins. "I was on this bus, and there was this young girl who saved a seat for me. Every morning, there was always an empty seat beside her." This seemingly innocent act of kindness blossomed into a connection that would grow over time.

As the two grew older, their paths diverged. "We went our separate ways through high school," Darlene explains. "He was in a different friend group, and I wasn't a 'shop girl.' But I had a crush on him in Grade 8." Despite their differences, the connection remained, and it wasn't until later that they reconnected in a more meaningful way.

A "cruise" down memory lane

One evening, as young adults, the two crossed paths while cruising down Main Street. Bernie shares, “We ended up parking in a lot and talked for hours that evening. The rest is history.”

Darlene adds, laughing, "We didn’t stay in separate vehicles all evening. We just connected so well. He asked me if he could see me again, and I said sure. It was actually February 8th when we officially started dating."

The wedding day

A year after starting their relationship, Bernie and Darlene married on November 4th, 1984, at 4:00 PM—a time chosen by Darlene for a more relaxing day. “I didn’t want stress,” she explains. "We went for breakfast at Mulligan's, and then everything fell into place. It was a wonderful day."

Bernie laughs, “We couldn’t have done it in September because I was farming. Farmers don’t have time for wedding stuff.”

The day was memorable not just for the couple, but also for the small details that Darlene had planned, such as doing her wedding party's nails and making sure the day was easygoing. "I still remember when the flowers arrived at the house. It was such a special moment,” she reflects.

Cherished keepsakes

Darlene has kept several memorabilia items from the wedding day, which she proudly shared on social media recently, including a burgundy feather pen used to sign the registry. “Our wedding colors were burgundy, pink, and gray,” she explains. “The pen was a perfect match."

She also still has her wedding dress, which remains in great condition. Darlene also cherishes a special family heirloom—her mother’s wedding dress from 1952. “It’s still in beautiful condition,” she shares. “I love looking at it and thinking about the history behind it. My mom was married in an era where dresses were elegant but modest, and it’s amazing to see how styles have changed over the years.” Though she chose her own gown for her wedding day, having her mother’s dress as a connection to the past makes it even more meaningful as she celebrates 40 years of marriage.

Memories, laughter, and love

Looking back, the couple acknowledges how much their lives have changed, but the love they share remains steadfast. Bernie smiles, “I remember the first card I gave her on Valentine’s Day. It was the beginning of everything.”

Through their trials and triumphs, including health hurdles and the challenges of raising a family, they’ve stayed strong together. Darlene reflects, “It was the hardships that brought us closer. We’ve been through a lot together.”

Bernie adds, “We’ve had our ups and downs, but we’ve always had each other. It’s been a very interesting life together.”

A lasting love

Now, 40 years later, the couple remains deeply in love, their bond stronger than ever. When asked about the secret to their enduring love, Darlene says, “It’s about being there for each other, no matter what. We’ve been through so much, but we’ve always had each other to lean on."

As they celebrate their milestone anniversary, Bernie and Darlene’s story is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and shared memories.
