Charges are pending against a 17-year-old male after a pick-up truck collided with a school bus transporting students Thursday morning in the R.M. of Lorne. The incident occurred at the intersection of two gravel roads northeast of Mariapolis, and just north of Highway 23 (Road 28 North and Road 66 West).

According to Pembina Valley RCMP, when they arrived on scene, they found the bus on its side in the southeast ditch of the intersection, along with the pick-up truck. Emergency Medical Responders and the local fire department also responded to the collision.

All 14 children, ranging from kindergarten to Grade 11, had already been evacuated from the bus when RCMP arrived.

Officers determined the pickup was travelling southbound on Road 66 West when it collided with the rear driver’s side of the school bus that was heading East on Road 28 North.

The 17-year-old sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital where he was treated and released.

The children on the bus sustained minor injuries. All of the students were transported to hospital as a precaution, with some transported to Winnipeg for further assessment.

Pembina Valley RCMP continue to investigate.
