Jean Harkness, Centenarian (nee Thompson)
Peacefully, on February 11, 2025, Jean Harkness passed away at the Lions Prairie Manor at the age of 100 years.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Glenn; son Grant; daughters-in-law Gillian and Beth; brothers Ross and Stephan Thompson; sister Norman McLaughlan, sisters-in-law Annie Thompson and Evelyn Thompson and brother-in-law Norman McLauchlan.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Shawn (Karen), Kim (Hilda) and Howard (Shirley); grandchildren Matt (Deane), Tiffany (Mark), Camilla (Jeremy), Nick, Robin (Shae), Oliva (AJ), Mallory (Ryan), Alex (Ty), Rebecca, Joseph, Scott & Brianne; several great grandchildren; special niece Donaleen (Larry) Gilchrist; along with numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Jean was born on September 3, 1924 in MacGregor, MB. She achieved her junior high schooling and worked as a salesclerk at Eaton’s for 8 years. On October 22, 1949 she married Glenn Harkness and lived on the Beaver farm. Her fondest memories were raising their 4 boys. Jean was always active in the United Church supporting and attending their various functions. She sang in the choir and was a member of the UCW. Jean gave time and energy to the MacGregor Hospital Aide and the Conservative Party. She enjoyed crafts, knitting, bridge, golf and curling. She enjoyed attending MTC in Winnipeg and the Glesby Center in Portage. In their travels, Texas, Alaska and New York were her favourites. She was very supportive of her four sons, their wives and all her grandchildren, encouraging them whenever she could.
Special thanks to the dedicated nurses, health care aids and doctors at the Lions Prairie Manor.
Memorial service will be held at Trinity United Church on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 1:00 pm. Private family interment will take place at Beaver Creek Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in memory of Jean may be made Muscular Dystrophy Canada or to Central Plains Cancer Services.
A tree will be planted and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
