The Estevan city council discussed sponsoring Creighton Lodge’s annual spring fundraising event at its latest meeting. The fundraiser will support a kitchen expansion at the assisted living facility.
Creighton Lodge is a Level 1 and 2 assisted living complex owned by five rural municipalities—the R.M. of Estevan, R.M. of Cymri, R.M. of Coalfields, R.M. of Benson, and R.M. of Cambria—with support from the City of Estevan.
Coun. Brian Johnson presented the sponsorship request to council. Before the discussion, Coun. Shelly Veroba excused herself due to her role as manager of Creighton Lodge. Coun. Kristen Walliser then inquired whether the expansion would serve only residents or if the broader community would also benefit.
Veroba was called back in to clarify the scope of the project. "We currently have 52 residents in the building. And so what our goal is, is to have an outreach program because we have more and more requests."
She noted that 239 people had requested both housing and food, while the Meals on Wheels program was already at capacity, leaving many seniors without support. Once the expansion is complete, Creighton Lodge plans to launch an outreach program, beginning with freezer meals and eventually adding a delivery service. One couple already picks up meals daily, demonstrating the demand for such services, Veroba explained.
"So that will all start rolling once we get the kitchen built, then we'll put staff in place, and then we'll look at the outreach program. So there's a lot of different things that will be coming down the pipe in the next upcoming year or two years. But yes, it's definitely for the community."
Following the discussion, Walliser proposed that the city sponsor the event with a $2,500 contribution, emphasizing the growing need for access to home-cooked meals for local seniors. The motion was seconded by Coun. Matthew Dubowski and passed unanimously, with Veroba excusing herself from the vote.
In addition to sponsorships and cash donations, supporters can contribute to the fundraiser by purchasing tickets or donating prizes. Tickets can be purchased through Creighton Lodge by contacting Veroba at 306-634-4154. The kitchen expansion project is set to begin in spring 2025, aiming to enhance meal services for both residents and the wider community.
