A rollercoaster game saw Portage clinch a spot in the MJHL playoffs this March, beating the Selkirk Steelers in a shootout, 4-3.

28 shots hit the goal in the first period, with Selkirk hammering several on net during a couple of power plays.

Cameron Bullinger slipped one home on a rebound, notching his 17th of the season.

Selkirk didn't take that lying down though, as they would add a pair of goals to start their first lead of the game.

Portage would get a late powerplay, and had some good chances, but were unable to tie it, trailing 2-1 through the first frame.

An extended powerplay resulted in another goal for the Steelers, as Portage found themselves unable to clear the zone, and a seeing-eye shot from the high slot found the back of the net. 3-1 Selkirk after 40 minutes.

Tristan Gravenor would add one early in the third period to make the score 3-2. Scott Cousins drove the net, and the puck stayed free for Gravenor to tap it in.

Bullinger added his second on the powerplay to knot the game up at 3, where it would stay into the extra frame.

He adds that getting the comeback completed felt really special.

"Coming down from 3-1, we ended up clinching [a playoff spot] this game, so it was really big for us."

With nothing solved in the extra period, it would go to a shootout, where Ryan Velan stopped all three shots, and Decker Mujcin played hero, notching the winner with a nifty move to score on the five-hole.

Velan adds that it's a situation he enjoys.

"I love a shootout. Overtime, I always want to win a shootout. I love a good one vs. one situation, so I felt good going into it, and I knew we were going to pull it off, so I was happy about it."

The team will play on home ice again on Wednesday, February 19, when the Virden Oil Capitals come to town. Puck drop for that game will be at 7:30 p.m.
