Cochrane is gearing up for the Coldest Night of the Year, happening tomorrow at the SLS Centre. Organized by Helping Hands, this national event raises funds to support the hurt, hungry and homeless.
“We’re at 73 per cent of our goal, and these final 24 hours are where we see enormous jumps,” says Laura McDonald, executive director of Helping Hands. “Our goal this year is $75,000, and every contribution makes a difference.”
The event welcomes registered walkers and teams. Registration opens at 4 p.m., and the five-kilometre walk starts at 5 p.m.
“At the halfway point, we have Starbucks and snacks for everyone. Then we’ll welcome walkers back with hot chili from Guy’s Café and a hot chocolate bar for the kids.”
For those still looking to fundraise, McDonald suggests reaching out to friends and family. “Every $20 makes an enormous impact. Walkers who raise $150 get this year’s exclusive toque, and for those under 18, the goal is just $75.”
Helping Hands relies on this fundraiser to fuel its programs. “Our volunteers create 1,000 hours of impact monthly, from driving people to appointments to rescuing 12,000 kilograms of food each month. We’re filling critical gaps in Cochrane,” says McDonald.

Participation isn’t limited to in-person walking. “If you can’t join us physically, you can be a virtual walker. Walk on a treadmill, in your neighbourhood, even in Mexico if you’re on vacation.”
As of today, 256 walkers and 52 teams have signed up.
“Numbers soar right up to the last minute. There’s still time to register.”
