A standard traffic stop turned into an investigation after a vehicle fled the police last Thursday night. Deputy Chief Shane St. John with the Weyburn Police Service says a truck fled at a high rate of speed after officers attempted a traffic stop for a burnt-out taillight.
“It ran off at a dangerous speed. It's very, very icy. We do have a pretty good idea who that truck belongs to, so that investigation is ongoing and charges will be pending.”
He explains vehicles that flee police are rarely afraid of a ticket and are typically hiding other criminal activity.
“They're maybe impaired, could be doing other criminal activity, maybe stolen property, or someone without a license, and they could have lost that license to an impaired or drug-impaired, so that is another criminal charge. It puts them at jeopardy.
“Sometimes they feel their best option is to run, which of course it isn't. It just brings a more serious consequences when we do find that subject.”
He notes the importance of checking vehicle lights to ensure they are working properly. This is important for the safety of the driver and other vehicles.
“If they're out, make sure you get them repaired. It's important, especially when it's foggy or a little hazy or snowy, you want to make sure you have good visibility on the road, and that's a key part of it.”
The Weyburn Police Service responded to a total of 70 calls for service from February 9th to February 16th.
