Denise Marie Alice (née Courchene)
May 12, 1932 – February 16, 2025
Denise (Duh-neez) Marie Alice Yeager (née Courchene) was born on May 12th, 1932, in Leckford, Saskatchewan. Losing her mother when she was five, Denise was raised by her father, Achille, with whom she was very close, and by aunts and older sisters (Desilda, Alma, and Doris). She grew up with her brothers Emile, Denis, Raymond (surviving) and Robert during the depression and World War II, moving from Saskatoon, SK to Duck Lake, SK, to St. Walburg, SK and then to St. Brieux, SK. After graduation from Stobart School in Duck Lake, she joined her father and brothers who were breaking land and farming near St. James, Sk. There she met Stephen Yeager, they married on October 23, 1956, and moved to Steve’s home farm near Lake Lenore, SK. Five children were born on the farm: Stephen, drowned in July of 1973 in Chemainus, B.C.; Michele (Bob McLarty); Naomi (Tim) Prodahl; Sheila (Dave) Bennett; and Amy (Greg) Chappell. In 1963, Steve and Denise relocated their family into Lake Lenore, where four more children were born: Linus (Cheryl); Nathan (Mariel); Keith (Nadine Courchene); and Alice (Ross) Lawrence.
Denise was always busy, involved in softball teams, home and school, the Rink Committee, 4H, and a cooking club for teens. She worked on the board and as an editor of the Lake Lenore History Book. She and Steve took St. Peter’s Adult Religious Education classes and founded Cana Colony North, a Christian family camping experience. Denise loved to bake, and her muffins were shared with the school and community. She was a longtime CWL member and faithful member of the Sunday after-mass muffin brigade, famous for her egg-bake. When Steve died June 29, 2007, Denise remained in Lake Lenore, aided greatly in her last years by Nomi and Tim and a community of caregivers, especially Lois Yeager.
Fiercely her own person, always up to a challenge, she was independent and determined, yet essentially shy when it came to relationships. She was not prone to hugs and flowery praise, but she was there with guidance and support and always, always, prayers. Denise will be remembered for her strong faith, sharp card-playing, self-taught sewing skills, her ragout and tourtiere, exceptionally clean house, love of reading and puzzle-building, that freezer full of muffins and mysteries, and the birthday and anniversary cards she sent to friends and every single descendant of her and Steve’s siblings, plus immediate family (as long as she could get her hands on an address)! She gave so much time to her community and so much love to her family and friends. She was, and is, so loved.
The Funeral Mass will be offered, at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Lake Lenore, SK. on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Donations in Denise’s memory may be directed to St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund (PO Box 10, Lake Lenore, SK, S0K 2J0) or St. Peter’s Abbey – Elder Care (PO Box 10, Muenster, SK, S0K 2Y0)
