A local cheer team was recognized at last night's city council meeting following their win on a very big stage.

The ECS cheer team competed in the Best of the West competition earlier this month and won first place in their division.

Coach Bonnie Chepil-Kvamme, who guides the team along with McKenna Van De Woestyne, talked at the meeting saying the team did very well, especially for their composition.

"We are the scholastic intermediate division, we were up against a total of five teams and this young, very, very, very young team, 50 per cent of my team is brand new and I have a very small team of 10 this year went and they did incredibly remarkable. Honestly, they peaked right on that mat, those were perfect, cheer was perfect. I couldn't have been prouder. The end result was actually winning."

Chepil-Kvamme says that while the team wasn't expecting to go that far, all of the hard work by the squad paid off with a win.

"We went in honestly thinking we just wanted to do a nice clean performance. We did not have an expectation other than that and to carry out that win and to get the highest scholastic mark in the entire competition was something that was completely unexpected and it was all due to the fabulous work of this team who is in the gym at 6:45 every morning that week working hard. We practice on Sundays for two hours."

The win means that their season isn't over yet, with Chepil-Kvamme saying they're now preparing for the provincials.

"It was a long journey and it's not over yet. Because of our placement, we're off to provincials, which is in Regina, on Saturday, March 15th."
